Pacquiao - Mayweather: let's get it on!

Over the past few days I've been reading reports that the Manny Pacquiao - Floyd Mayweather fight is very close to being a done deal. Promoter Bob Arum is in the Philippines trying to finalize the negotiations with the Pacquiao camp. It sounds like the fight will take place in March and three possible venues have already been named. Las Vegas, Dallas, and New Orleans; in the end I can’t think of a fight fan who really cares where the fight takes place as long as it takes place.

Even with all the talk of the fight negotiations being nearly over I will not hold my breath. Too many times we have heard a fight is all but done and never see it happen. Until the contracts are signed I won’t believe it, not until I see it. That being said I want nothing more than to see it happen, For boxing fans, this fight is the Super Bowl and World Series wrapped into one for boxing fans and it absolutely needs to happen I can’t stress that enough. How often do we get to see the two best fighters in the world square off?

Is it really the biggest fight of all time? That's tough to answer. Boxing has seen many important fights that not only held importance in the ring but also outside of the ring. Jack Johnson becoming the first black heavyweight champion or Joe Louis beating Max Schmeling were big fights, yes, but they were more important outside of the ring than in it. The fight between Manny and Floyd is just that, a fight.

Most boxing fans realize this will not be an action packed fight. It will not be filled with back and forth exchanges that will be talked about for years to come. What it will be is a chess match. The offensive fire power of Manny Pacquiao and the unbreakable defense of Floyd Mayweather. It will be a game of cat and mouse and the winner will be the fighter with the most smarts, the fighter who can out think the other. While it may not be the second coming of Hagler - Hearns it will be a fight that is remembered as all are when two of the best fighters of their generation meet in the ring.
